Technical Architecture

Built for privacy, with no central service to depend on.

Plain MQTT Protocol

Works with any standard MQTT broker, public or your own. Beep ships with six free public brokers (EMQX, HiveMQ, FreeMQTT, Mosquitto, Coreflux and ConnectMQ): three stay connected all the time, and the others step in as backups if one drops.

End-to-End Zero-Knowledge

Every message is signed with your Ed25519 identity, then sealed with X25519 and AES-256-GCM using a one-time key. Brokers pass along ciphertext and never hold a key that opens it.

Serverless & Decentralized

No accounts, no phone number, and no server of ours to trust. Contacts swap keys by scanning a QR code or opening an invite link, and can compare a safety number to be sure.

Made to Keep Running

Beep stays connected in the background so pages arrive on time, and urgent pages can ring through. On phones that close background apps, Beep points you to the Autostart setting that keeps it alive.

Full Backup

Move to a new phone without starting over. One passphrase-locked backup carries your identity, contacts and brokers. Messages stay on the phone they were sent to.

Your Language, Your Colours

Beep speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Indonesian and Hindi, and comes with 23 colour palettes, including a light theme with its own brightness slider.
